The UK government has officially increased visa and immigration fees from April 8, 2026, impacting millions of applicants worldwide. These changes apply to visitor visas, student visas, skilled worker routes, settlement applications, and more.
The update, introduced by the UK Home Office, is part of a broader strategy to fund a more digital, efficient immigration system while shifting more costs onto applicants.
This blog breaks down the latest official charges, what has changed, and how it affects tourists, international students, and workers planning to move to the UK.
Why Has the UK Increased Visa Fees?
The UK government has introduced a general increase of around 6% to 7% across most visa categories, with some categories seeing higher hikes.
Key reasons include:
- Funding digital transformation of the visa system
- Covering rising operational costs
- Reducing reliance on taxpayer funding
- Maintaining a “user-pays” immigration model
Recent reports also confirm that the increase affects all major visa routes globally.
